Adventures in Baby food: Creating my Own

Most of what I am learning about making baby food I learned from friends, and Baby Food 101, which I really like because they list things by ingredient, and give suggested ages to start certain foods. I highly recommend checking them out.

I am fortunate, because Miss E is a pretty adventurous eater, but I have learned that even if she likes something at first, it doesn't always agree with her later. Hence, my 3 hours of sleep last night due to screaming baby with a sick tummy! (More on that later.)

Tools of the Trade:

I know there are some fancy things out there to make your own baby food-baby blenders, mixers, fancy portion cup, and on and on. I used what I already have, and it seems to be working good so far. I use the Black and Decker Handy Chopper Plus, and it's awesome! It really chops great, but will actually puree, too. I like this a lot better than my blender, and it's much easier to clean, too!

Right now, for storage, I am reusing my Gerber baby food containers in plastic and dated with a sharpie, which isn't ideal, but until I can get my ice cube trays with the cover, they will have to do. I don't have much freezer space, but I'm not making a ton yet, anyway.

Variety is the Spice of Life

My friend Amanda G. suggested to check out the baby food aisle to get good ideas of interesting food combos to keep Miss E interested, and that has worked really well so far. I also have some specific ingredients, like mint, that I grow myself, and have a lot of, so I use the Babyfood 101 website to look those up.

The most recent one I did was beets, bananas and mint. Look how beautiful the beets come out! I just baked them on 350 degrees for about 30 min in foil, with a little water, and then sliced the up, and threw them in the chopper. Easy, peasy, just like I like!

I also did baked apples this day, so I did a variety combo of beets/bananas, and beets/baked apple, and just plain baked apples. I was able to cook them all at the same time (separate dishes, though.

Beautiful beets diced and into the chopper!

Mint and banana slices added for a great, smooth puree she will love.

The final product looked so gorgeous! Yum-O! I will have to let you know how she liked it very soon!
